This topic describes how to download, install, and use device emulators for Windows Mobile 6.x.

Installing and Using the Emulator Images

Download and Install the Images

  1. Go to Microsoft Download Center and search for 'Windows Mobile 6 emulator images.'

  2. Sort the search results by Released date with the most recent at the top.

  3. Navigate to the download page for the most recently released version of the images. It will have a title similar to 'Windows Mobile 6.x.x Emulator Images'. If it does not have 'Localized' in the title and you would like an image in a language other than English, navigate to the most recently released version that has 'Localized' in the title.

  4. Click the download button for the package of emulators that you need.

    Note

    There are two packages of emulators for Windows Mobile 6.x: Standard Images and Professional Images. Hereafter, this topic assumes that you are installing the standard set, but the instructions are the same for the professional set: simply read 'Professional' for 'Standard' in the remainder of this topic.

  5. On Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, right-click the downloaded msi file and select Run as Administrator. On any other version of Windows, double-click the file. The wizard will guide you through the installation.

  6. On the Start menu, select All Programs and then Windows Mobile 6 SDK. If this node has a child node called Standalone Emulator Images, skip the next step and continue with the procedure Launch an Emulator. If this node does not have a child node called Standalone Emulator Images, then you will need to take the next step to re-run the installation program in repair mode.

  7. You repair the installation in Control Manager. The exact steps vary with the version of Windows and whether or not you are using the Classic View of Control Manager, but the essentials are the same: Highlight the package of emulator images (it will have a name similar to Windows Mobile 6 Emulator Images) on the list of installed applications and choose the Repair option (it may be called Change). The installation wizard may prompt you again to choose whether to remove or repair the installation. Again, choose repair. The wizard will guide you through the installation.

Launch an Emulator

  1. Launch your device-to-computer synchronization application. This will be either Microsoft ActiveSync or Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center, depending on your operating system. For more information about installing and running a synchronization application, see Setting Up Mobile Device Emulators.

  2. On the Start menu, select All Programs and then Windows Mobile 6 SDK | Standalone Emulator Images. Under this node, select a language and then an emulator image. The emulator will open in a window.

  3. If Microsoft Device Emulator manager is not open, open it in Microsoft Visual Studio or as a standalone. For more information on how to do this, see Setting Up Mobile Device Emulators. If it is already open, click the Refresh button in it.

  4. The Windows Mobile 6.x emulator is listed in the Device Manager as a GUID under the Others node. Right-click it and select Cradle.

  5. The remaining steps are almost exactly the same as those in Setting Up Mobile Device Emulators, beginning with step 5 in the procedure 'Launch an Emulator'. The one difference is that the Synchronization Setup Wizard will prompt you whether to allow wireless connections to your device while it is connected to the computer. Choose to disable this option.

Navigate to a Page

  1. Use the emulator’s UI to launch a browser, such as Internet Explorer.

  2. Navigate to the page you want to test. For a page on a SharePoint Web site, you normally navigate to the same URL as you would on a computer client. The runtime detects that you are using a mobile device and automatically redirects you to the mobile version of the page. If the page is a Web Parts page, any Web Part with a mobile adapter will be rendered by the adapter.

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 (codenamed 'Yamazaki')[3] is the sixth major release of the Microsoft Windowsembedded operating system targeted to enterprise-specific tools such as industrial controllers and consumer electronics devices like digital cameras. CE 6.0 features a kernel that supports 32,768 processes, up from the 32-process limit of prior versions. Each process receives 2 GB of virtual address space, up from 32 MB.

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 was released on November 1, 2006 and includes partial source code.[4] The OS currently serves as the basis for the Zune HDportable media player. Windows Mobile 6.5 is based on Windows CE 5.2. Windows Phone 7, the first major release of the Windows Phone operating system, is based on Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3; although Windows Phone 7 is also using Windows Embedded Compact 7 features.[5]

New features[edit]

  • Some system components (such as filesystem, GWES (graphics, windowing, events server),[6]device driver manager) have been moved to the kernel space.
  • The system components which now run in kernel have been converted from EXEs to DLLs, which get loaded into kernel space.
  • New virtual memory model. The lower 2 GB is the process VM space and is private per process. The upper 2 GB is the kernel VM space.
  • New device driver model that supports both user mode and kernel mode drivers.
  • The 32 process limit has been raised to 32,768 processes.
  • The 32 megabyte virtual memory limit has been raised to the total virtual memory; up to 2 GB of private VM is available per process.
  • The Platform BuilderIDE is integrated into Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 as plugin (thus forcing the client to obtain Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 also), allowing one development environment for both platform and application development.
  • Read-only support for UDF 2.5 filesystem.
  • Support for Microsoft's exFAT filesystem.
  • 802.11i (WPA2) and 802.11e (QoS) wireless standards, and multiple radio support.
  • CE 6.0 is compatible with x86, ARM, SH4 (only up to R2)[7] and MIPS based processor architectures.
  • New Cellcore components to enable devices to easily make data connections and initiate voice calls through cellular networks.

New features in R3[edit]

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 was finalized in September 2009 for OEMs and serves as the base platform for the Zune HD and Windows Phone 7. CE 6.0 R3 includes the following new features and abilities:[8][9]
